This brief video shows a few simple ways you can minimize your risk in the event of a car accident. No one plans to be in a car crash, and you can't completely eliminate the possibility of injury, but these steps can help reduce your risk.

Today I'm talking about a couple quick tips that you can do to prevent from being injured in the event of a car accident and the fact of the matter is there's a lot of car accidents every single day, thankfully today not so much.

A couple things you can do, first and foremost of course is to wear your seat belt. For one, it's the law and second your odds of walking away from a car accident skyrocket just by wearing your seatbelt.

A couple things on that, you want to make sure your seat belt is snug and that you should always use the safety harness. Never slip it behind your arm like that. Make sure that you have it across the top of your shoulder.

Some cars allow for adjusting where it's attached to your car so you'll see here, mine is adjustable, you can raise or lower the site of attachment.

You want to be at or just above the level of your shoulder. You don't want really high which is to make the attachment point of the seat belt safety harness a bit higher as well.

That would be for someone that's taller but that also increases the travel time if you get collided with so make sure it's nice and snug and buckle of course, at the bottom.

The second thing you want to make sure is that your headrest is adjusted. What you want is your headrest to be about an inch from the back of your head and an inch below the top of your head.

So you may need to adjust your seat so that it's not tilted too far back like this. You want to adjust it so that your seat rest it is about an inch from the back of your head.

Secondly, the seat rest should be raised so that's it's an inch from below the top of your head and this is all because in a rear-end collision what happens is the impact occurs and your body travels forward and then backward.

Your head will travel backward but it also travels upward. So it goes up and back in response to the impact at the back of your car and if your headrest is too far back that increases the travel time and it increases the likelihood that you'll have whiplash.

Whiplash can occur in as little as four to five miles per hour of a crash. So even if you're stopped at a stop sign and a car bumps into you as they're stopping that's enough if you're unprepared for it and your seat rest isn't adjusted properly.

That's enough to cause severe sprain strain, tearing of the ligaments in your neck and injury. So adjusting your seat rest, your headrest, is one way to prevent that from happening.

The next thing is more of a ergonomics thing, you just want to adjust your seat again so that you're somewhat close to your steering wheel. Enough so that your arms at a slight bend, that they're not perfectly straight and that you're reaching for the steering wheel.

You want to be nice and relaxed, so you have the ability to respond and swerve your steering wheel if necessary. And, in a relaxed position so you don't have a lot of strain and stress on your neck and your shoulders.
