Losing weight over the holidays can seem like a pipe dream. Yet, every year, I coach people through holiday weight loss.
The holidays are really no different than any other time of the year. We are always busy, always eating, always running around.
It’s just during the holidays we are more aware of the stresses placed on us. And most people just give up trying to battle the bulge.
In a recent overview of various records, researchers found that people spend the same amount of time watching TV, shopping (both online and off), eating (via food purchases), and running around (based on gas purchases) during the time from Thanksgiving to New Years.
So, how do we make holiday weight loss a reality?
Actively choose healthier foods
– People get many more presents of sugary foods and then eat them from October through December. Sugar is the #1 cause of weight gain and diabetes.
Keep up with eating fruits and vegetables
– In many areas of the country, farmer’s markets have closed up. Only the larger ones have farmers that have the ability to store produce. Get to know these farmers and learn how to eat seasonally. No, strawberries in January are not natural, but cabbage and onion are. Learn how to preserve produce through canning, freezing, and fermenting. You can have good foods all year round.
Winter is a time when you can enjoy the fruits of the summer.
Holiday weight loss can be a good reality when you make better choices.
It’s all about choice and planning.
If you don’t plan for the parties, gifts, dinners, and other stuff, you leave it up to chance. Chance means you have to make hard choices without the time to weigh the consequences.
