The Significance Of Your Knees And ACL Physical Therapy

Many of us take for granted the importance of our knees and how much we rely on our knees to do most of our day to day activities. We hardly recognize this fact because we have a tendency to overuse our knees when we do activities like playing sports, running, exercising and even walking. When one of our knees suddenly gets injured, this is the only time we understand its importance. For the reason that our mobility is restricted and our actions are limited.

One of the most common knee injuries usually happens when our anterior cruciate ligament or ACL is torn or damaged. This ligament connects our thigh bone and shin bone, so you could just imagine the damage such an injury may cause on your daily life. That is why, it is important to undergo an ACL physical therapy soon after experiencing such an injury.

Those who are susceptible to this type of injury are athletes since they tend to overuse their knees whenever they play physical sports such as basketball, football, soccer and so on. Also, obese individuals are prone to an ACL injury because of the weight and pressure that are put on their knees. On the other hand, those who fall, slip or trip may obtain an ACL injury too.

If the knee is seriously injured, surgery may be required and part of the process of recovery is undergoing an ACL physical therapy. Such therapy is important as it helps strengthen the muscles in order to make the knee steady and stable. Therefore, you will be able to hasten your recovery process and get on to doing your daily routines.

In addition, further knee injuries can be avoided through therapy. The therapy typically consists of several exercises that should be done daily. These exercises are gradually intensified while the therapy progresses. This is to make sure that the knee can provide the correct support and balance like it did before the injury happened.

Several of the exercises include leg raises, thigh tensing and contractions, knee circles and also mini squats. Your physical therapist will help you with your day-to-day exercises. Depending on the seriousness of your injury, you may be forced to do some exercises with the use of some machines or equipment. It's vital that you take your ACL physical therapy seriously if you wish to fully recover from your injury.

Moreover, you should listen to what your therapist has to say, his or her assessment of your injury and progress along with tips and advises on how to avoid future injuries from happening. Part of caring for your body is taking good care of your knees as these are important for support and movement.
