Today we’re seeing a coalescence of different ideas from people like Grey Cook, Gary Gray, Professor Stewart McGill, and many many many others.

What we’re seeing is that everybody is starting to get on the same side of the ball. Basically, in a nutshell, the rehabilitation of the motor system begins with a functional assessment.

I appreciate the different model that he’s given chiropractors as a way to treat that’s very patient centered and it’s very focused on the patients who want to help themselves get well moving out of passive care into active care.

I think it’s something that all of us need to learn I appreciate the way he’s made it simple, elegant, and straightforward.

The approach that Dr. Leibenson takes to patient care is not one that’s difficult to comprehend. It’s nice to see that a comprehensive approach, one that’s simple, one that’s easy, easy to implement in my own practice.

Any practitioners’ of physical medicine seem to be focused on techniques, whatever is new and sexy, and what enables you to be able to enable a patient. This is more about empowering patients. This is more about how you formulate your understanding of what’s presenting in front of you and tailor-making the perfect treatment plan for that particular patient.

I found this personally very useful in my practice over a number of years and I found that I get a lot better results with patients, when I not only do the hands-on work that I typically do as a chiropractor, but add this kind of assessment and exercise prescription for my patients.

It was very valuable especially as a student. I had already taken Graston and ART so I understand the structural stuff and the soft tissue and I did a lot of MPI but this just brought it more together.

A lot of the principles here we’ve learned in school. We’ve touched on a lot of the stuff that we did here, from the core activities, to the key Maclean patterns, all of that sort of thing. But this just was like putting it into a more clinical perspective, so that was very helpful, and learning how to do it properly.

In the courses we focus on hands-on work and an experiential opportunity to see Grand Rounds, to see live patients, to troubleshoot on each other in a workshop setting, and not just focus on the skills or the techniques but the process and the principles of care.

It’s the process and the principles, a functional assessment of finding each person’s weak link, and then finding a solution, finding a way to regroup a motor pattern, so that we can have a stepping stone to broader activity and tolerance.

That’s what the courses are all about. These are small group settings with teaching assistants, so that everybody gets to have feedback from other experts, so they can learn to do these exercises and do these functional tests, with a high level of skill.

I hope that you may have an opportunity to attend some of these courses and see how to integrate all of this great work of Robin Mackenzie, Professor McGill, Professor Yonda and so many others.
