vitamin-d-foods Type 2 Diabetes – Vitamin D Levels Are Linked to the Health of Blood Vessels

Heart and blood vessel disease is probably the most worrisome complication of Type 2 diabetes.
In May of 2017, the online journal PLOS ONE reported on a study showing vitamin D is essential for forming new cells to line the inside of the vessels transporting blood throughout the entire body.
Scientists at Tel Aviv University and several other research facilities in Israel recruited fifty-one people who had been previously diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. The scientists removed from the participants, bone marrow cells destined to grow and develop into cells that would line the inside of blood vessels and produced them either with or without vitamin D. One week later the cells grown with vitamin D were healthier and better developed than those grown without the vitamin.
Not surprisingly, recent studies have shown vitamin D to have a healing effect on the heart and blood vessels.
The investigators suggested more research is needed to indicate how vitamin D affects future blood vessel cells in their early stages.
breast – may regulate cell growth.
colon – higher levels of vitamin D correspond with lower levels of cancer.
prostate – lower levels of vitamin D linked to more aggressive cancer.
ovaries – women with cancer likely to have low vitamin D levels.
esophagus – lower levels were seen in people exposed to sunlight (skin makes vitamin D with exposure to ultraviolet).
immune system – inhibits proliferation of some kinds of cells
heart and blood vessel disease – a deficiency of vitamin D raises the risk of heart attacks, congestive failure, peripheral artery disease, strokes
multiple sclerosis – vitamin D may protect nerves from damage seen in MS
rheumatoid arthritis – low levels of vitamin D associated with inflammation
Vitamin D has been known for some time to promote absorption of calcium, an essential component of bones. Not getting enough vitamin D, especially as we age, can lead to softening of the bones, or osteoporosis.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
